4 Things you need to face as a work-at-home parent

The idea of working from home might be tempting, but there is a lot to consider before deciding to move your office plants. Working from home plays out differently for everyone and relying on one sure method will only end in tears.

There is a lot more to consider than just how you will be spending your time between work and children, and in which room.

If you are making this decision because you think it will make others happy, you might find yourself feeling resentful in future. On the other hand, it might turn out to be one of the most rewarding changes you make.

Although, there isn't one sure recipe that works for everyone, there are some factors to face when deciding to combine work and family space.

1. Find a balance between your personal and professional life

Being two steps away from your personal life doesn't make things easier for your professional life. Without even noticing; you'll be doing a quick load of washing, watering plants, prepping meals, etc. all while your inbox keeps filling up. You will need to find a balance between the two; either it being a spatial divide or a shift in mindset, it will depend on what works for you.

2. Adjust to a new routine

You and your children need to adapt to a new routine. Yes, your time will be more flexible, but it will still revolve around the commute to school, nap times, meals, and playdates. A new routine can be challenging for a child.

The best course of action would be to eliminate the element of surprise by keeping your child informed. Make it a priority every morning to tell your child about the day ahead; what he/she can expect, who they will meet, and how you are feeling about the day.

3. Effectively manage expectations

Your children will love having you at home, but your attention will still be divided between them and work. It is important to keep your children involved in the process and informed about how your time at home will change. Ask them for solutions on how the household can work together and come up with a schedule that would work for everyone.

4. A new network of people and conversations

Your daily interactions will change. The shift from your work environment to your home and school-based environment can be challenging on a social level. Working from home with your children at your side all day is challenging enough, but also being surrounded by parents who have a different mindset than you, can take an emotional toll. Be sure to be kind to yourself, and make time away from all the noises and voices that surround you.

There's more than one way to work from home. The best one is creating the best solution that suits your life and work style. And if your job can't adjust to your goals, then start hunting for the job that will or find the right home business opportunity.
