4 Healthy ways to transition into spring

In nature, the transition from winter-to-spring is perhaps the most important change of the year. The trees shake off their brown coats, the animals start to flourish, and the flowers begin to bloom. And just like nature around us, we also need to let go of our winter habits and embrace the season of growth.

Seasonal changes can have a direct impact on your overall health. Like everything and everyone around you, you will be exposed to change; and the best way to prepare for change is to eliminate the element of surprise.

Gradually preparing your body, mind, and immune system for the warmer seasons will help build a barrier of protection against any possible allergies, infections, or diseases. Let's take a look at some of the things you can do to help you transition smoothly.

Take care of your skin, hair, and nails

Constant cold weather can take a toll on your most beautiful features. As spring arrives, your skin, hair, and nails are still in survival mode and will need some tender care and support with the transition to the warmer months.

As we start exploring outside more often, you will need to become diligent with applying sunscreen and lip balm. Your skin has been locked indoors for months, and too much sun, suddenly, can be quite a shock.

Be kind to your skin and ease it gradually into the light.

Reassess your routine. While fighting dryness for months, your new battle will become sweat and oiliness. Be sure to re-evaluate the products you use and swap them out for their spring/summer versions. Pay a visit to your dermatologist if you are unsure.

We love adding Sporton's Omegatone and Skin, Hair & Nails to our diet. Omegatone is a high potency fish oil supplement containing essential fatty acids. It is a rich source of moisture that has many benefits. Skin, Hair & Nails contains the right balance of micronutrients including omega3, B-complex vitamins, and collagen.

Listen to your gut

Lack of exercise, poor food choices, antibiotics, and other drugs we use during the cold season can throw your gut health off balance.

Many tiny organisms, called probiotics, live in your gut. In simple terms, probiotics are the friendly soldiers that help fight off harmful diseases; keeping the immune system healthy. Bad lifestyle choices or medication can destroy the good bacteria and leave your system vulnerable to infection. Therefore, you need to refuel your gut with the right bacteria before spring arrives.

A gut-healthy diet can help you reintroduce the good bacteria in your belly.

You can add a supplement to your diet, that will assist in speeding up the process. Our favourite supplement is Sportron's Floraplex. It is loaded with the right stuff! One capsule contains pre- and probiotics that increase protection against disease-causing bacteria.

Your immune system

Even as flu season comes to a close - your immune system will still be vulnerable to other harmful diseases; especially allergies, infections, and even colds.

Your system is hopping on a rollercoaster as the season starts to change, and the best way to approach this rollercoaster is by strapping yourself in with the correct gear.

Our go-to spring supplements are Sportron's Respitron (available in capsules and syrup) and Ultragard. Ultragard is your all-in-one dietary supplement that provides overall support to your immune system, while Respitron is specifically designed to support the nutritional status of the respiratory system. Respitron is ideal for people who suffer from hay-fever, nasal congestion, and sneezing during spring.

Your mind

The colder months can lead to hours spent indoors that can lead to reclusive behaviour, lack of energy, anxiety, and in extreme cases depression.

Some people call spring the season of hope. We welcome the new in everything around us; why not also ourselves?

It will take motivation and commitment, but you need to get your groove back. Start slow. Adjust to your regular exercise routine when you notice the days getting warmer. Fuel your diet with fruits, vegetables, and nuts that keep your energy levels balanced and consistent. Avoid too much sugar! Too much sugar will spike your energy levels but also drop it rapidly, making you feel worse than before.

Get outdoors. You have no excuse. South Africa is sunny all year long.

Try to take your lunch outside and allow your body to soak up some proper sun nutrition. It is a natural mood enhancer and will help prep you for the warmer months ahead.

Supplement your mind with Sportron's Neurotron. Neurotron is a dietary supplement that will help your nervous system adapt nutritionally to the seasonal changes ahead.

Yes, there is still some time before you need to pack away your woolly blankets, bulky sweaters, and heaters, BUT you need to start taking care of your health NOW. Our chilly winter mornings are already melting away. So, don't be caught off guard!
